The Frank blog
“We won’t make things up”
A trustworthy read tells you what it can’t see. The honesty is the proof.
The most dangerous thing about the marketing reports you've been sent over the years is not that some of them were wrong. It's that all of them were confident. Every chart pointed somewhere. Every recommendation arrived fully certain of itself. Nothing ever said "we don't know," and so you had no way to tell the parts that were actually true from the parts that were dressed to look true. When everything sounds equally sure, nothing can be trusted, and you end up trusting nothing. That, more than any wasted dollar, is what those reports cost you.
I spent twenty-five years inside marketing, much of it doing strategy for brands like Google, Nike, and Coca-Cola, and I can tell you where that confidence comes from. It isn't knowledge. It's incentive. A report that admits uncertainty invites the question "then what am I paying you for," so the uncertainty gets sanded off before the report goes out. The fog isn't a failure of the industry's methods. It is one of them.
